the thing is i'm going half way around the world to drink mint juleps on a savannah porch. but the sad truth is, i don't like them.

i had my first last night, here pictured...

and wowser. i'm still drunk basically days later. i checked with google and my bartender made it right. but honestly the "sickly sweet" juleps criticised in this article sound like sweet sweet relief. next time i will ask for it to be made sickly sweet. because even with mint it just tasted like straight bourbon. i'm sure you're worried about how i will fit in in savannah if i can't handle my bourbon julep. don't worry - apparently locals prefer their bourbon with sweet sweet cola. it will be like visiting the hutt on a friday night. and i will fit right in.

incidentally i had my julep at matterhorn. i am not a matterhorn fan. it is too cool for school. and it has posers as installation art or something. its cousin mighty mighty is more my scene. but what matterhorn has going for it is that you think of a cocktail and chances are it is on their menu. at first i thought the sixteen dollar price tag outrageous, but then i was reading my religious sites and saw this article. okay to be honest i don't routinely read religious sites but this one talked about mint juleps. if you can't be bothered reading the link let me summarise: one thousand dollar mint juleps to pay for the retirement of thoroughbred horses. this makes me think the sixteen dollars was reasonable. or more reasonable. given my companion couldn't finish theirs maybe ten dollars would have been better. anyway, you live and learn. next week: i learn to love manhattans for my NY leg of the trip. also, suggestions for cocktails are welcomed for hawaii, boston, las vegas and LA.

Hawaii should of course be maitais - call Imbibe ahead of time to see if they'll get in pineapples to serve it in.

Here are your questions Ms Homeperm:

1. What is the worst hairstyle you have ever had?

2. Describe the contents of your bathroom cabinet. Anything embarassing in there?

3. What's the one record/casette/cd you have in your collection that you would hide in the event of a romantic encounter (ie you don't want him to know you have it)

4. Have you ever been in a fist fight? Did you win?

5. Have you ever forgottent to put an essential piece of clothing on? What happened?

the boston cooler. and i quote (from my favourite book, "drinkology"): "the pale, translucent yellow Boston Cooler is a truly excellent summertime highball: light, tart and clean-tasting".

2 oz light rum
1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon icing sugar
club soda
lemon twist

rim highball glass with lemon twist and fill glass with ice cubes. combine the rum, lemon juice and sugar in a shaker with ice. shake well and strain into the glass. top with soda, stir briefly and garnish with the twist.

i had several of these last summer and they were terribly refreshing.

also: the gin fizz was invented in the boston ritz carlton, where ONCE I STAYED

yrs sincerely
